Mayor of Tirana, City of Tirana
Pandemic response in a city under urban transformation
Managing the impact of a pandemic in a time when the city was recovering from two earthquakes that hit the country in late 2019 has been one of the biggest challenges that Tirana has had to tackle in its first 100 years as a capital. In responding to the Covid-19 pandemic, we have all had to adapt to novel circumstances and learn how to use them for the better. In Tirana we have combined the new normal with our ongoing efforts of building a more sustainable and resilient city.
Erion Veliaj was re-elected as Mayor of Tirana in June 2019, after being firstly elected as the city's 42nd Mayor in 2015. Prior to his tenure Veliaj served as a Member of the Parliament of Albania and as Minister of Social Welfare and Youth from 2013 through 2015. Before joining the ranks of the Socialist Party in 2011, Veliaj had a long experience as the leader of the civic organization "Mjaft", which he co-founded in 2003. Veliaj has also worked with several international humanitarian organizations in the Americas, Eastern Africa and Kosovo. Veliaj holds a Master's degree in European Integration from the University of Sussex and a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from the Grand Valley State University.
